Often I hear from conservatives stuck in their own little world that Obama can’t run on his record. This should be, by this point, obviously false. Not only can Obama run on his record, but he is running on his record, to great effect. The Republican candidates, obviously not happy about this, first started by trying to directly attack his record on things like foreign policy and the economy. When it became obvious that they would not be able to win the foreign policy argument against a sitting President who got Osama bin Laden, and the economic good news continued to roll in, they switch gears on the major message – to that of theology and social issues. more

Yesterday, both the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate passed a full year extension of the payroll tax holiday, as well as extending unemployment benefits and a “Doc Fix” for Medicare payments. In the House, a bipartisan vote of 293-132 passed the measure, while both parties in the Senate also had members breaking ranks to vote for and against the measure with a 60-36 vote.
While it is true that this is a good short term benefit for the average household, and keeps unemployment benefits extended beyond the standard 26 weeks, one aspect of this that is not being talked about is important – President Obama’s leadership. more

Does everyone remember when Joe Wilson shouted “You Lie!” during a State of the Union speech? Or when Jan Brewer stuck her finger in the President’s face? How about when Bill O’Reilly interrupted Obama several times during a 15 minute interview?
Perhaps a little less known, but also relevant phenomenon is what certain pundits do when they get on talk shows, especially shows that are liberal leaning such as Real Time with Bill Maher, The Rachel Maddow Show, and others. Shouting over other speakers and repeating oft-debunked talking points are a staple of a certain type of right wing pundit, and it needs to stop. more

Ever since the new unemployment numbers for January 2012 have come out, the conservatives have been scrambling to find something wrong with it – from conspiracy theories about how he numbers are cooked, to arguments about what the “real” unemployment numbers should be. The conspiracy theories are nonsense, so we are not going to deal with those. Instead, we are going to talk about what “real” unemployment means to the conservatives, and what the Bureau of Labor and Statistics means when it calculates the unemployment numbers. more

In perhaps the most baffling attempt lately of the right to find some bone to pick with the President and Democrats, contraception has become a major focus. Seeking to energize their base, some Republican leaders have come out against contraception wholesale – declaring it to be immoral and wrong somehow. The health care law known as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act has a provision in it requiring all employers, with specific exemptions (such as exempting institutions that primarily employ persons who share its religious tenets or primarily serves persons who share its religious tenets), who are providing health care insurance to their employees, to have contraception covered at no cost as part of that health care coverage.
The Public Religion Research Institute released a survey in which every single demographic has majority support for such a measure. In addition, 28 states already have state level requirements similar to the health care law. 98% of Catholic women already use some form of birth control. All of this would seem to indicate that there should be zero controversy around requiring health insurance to cover it.
And yet, conservative right wing fringe groups have sought to end the use of contraception and are getting louder about it. more

Washington State can be said to be a progressive state, even though it mostly has a population that splits 50/50 on most partisan issues. The political issue of gay marriage is a hot topic, and has been tightly contested even in the state of Washington, until recently.
In a vote taken on February 1, 2012, the Washington State Senate passes a gay marriage equality bill 28-21. The Senate was considered the biggest hurdle to the legislation, with the House expected to approve it easily and governor Gregoire expected to sign it as soon as it reaches her desk. When that happens, Washington State will become the 7th state to legalize same-sex marriage. more

A topic that gets too little coverage nowadays, Climate Change, is back in the spotlight this week as a new NASA report highlights what has been obvious for years: Global warming is real and humans are mostly the cause. That’s mostly, with an M.
Not only is Climate Change real, but the science behind it has been telling us this for some time. Ever since the conversation first started, there have been those that deny it out of fear that the status quo of drilling for oil and massive amounts of pollution caused by their “free market” efforts will be hampered by anyone trying to stop global warming from happening. more
