In an amazing example of retroactive continuity and facts replacement in politics, Rand Paul went on the ABC Sunday morning show ABC This Week and argued that “the size of growth of government is enormous under President Obama.” more

A renewed focus on the idea of individualism and making it on your own seems to be in full swing on the Republican side of the aisle this year. The Republicans went so far as to convert an out of context quote by President Barack Obama into the theme for their convention this year. Republicans would have us believe we are all “self made,” that every man is an island unto himself that determines, through his own choices and his own choices alone, where his life will lead. And, in contrast, they would have us believe that government does not help anyone build or accomplish anything. In other words, if you’re successful it is because of good choices, and if you are not successful it is because of bad choices. These ideas are false. more

Today, the unemployment and job numbers came out from the Bureau of Labor and Statistics. 227,000 new jobs were added in February, and the unemployment rate stayed steady at 8.3% due to more workers entering the workforce. As such, the U-6 statistic, which includes just about everyone, dropped from 15.1% to 14.9%. The job numbers that were estimated in January have actually been revised from 243,000 new jobs to 284,000 new jobs. more

It shouldn’t be a surprise by now to many that Rush Limbaugh is full of crap. It also shouldn’t be a surprise that he’s an unrepentant fool and a misogynist. However, what is surprising is that it’s actually costing him.
For those not up to speed, Rush Limbaugh attacked Sandra Fluke, a student at Gerogetown University who testified before Congress. He did so on February 29th, March 1, and March 2. He started by calling her a slut and a prostitute, because in his mind Sandra Fluke was asking for the government to pay for her contraceptives. Despite the fact that this is not at all what she actually testified about, it shows exactly where Rush Limbaugh’s mind is at regarding women, and regarding contraceptives. more

Often I hear from conservatives stuck in their own little world that Obama can’t run on his record. This should be, by this point, obviously false. Not only can Obama run on his record, but he is running on his record, to great effect. The Republican candidates, obviously not happy about this, first started by trying to directly attack his record on things like foreign policy and the economy. When it became obvious that they would not be able to win the foreign policy argument against a sitting President who got Osama bin Laden, and the economic good news continued to roll in, they switch gears on the major message – to that of theology and social issues. more

Yesterday, both the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate passed a full year extension of the payroll tax holiday, as well as extending unemployment benefits and a “Doc Fix” for Medicare payments. In the House, a bipartisan vote of 293-132 passed the measure, while both parties in the Senate also had members breaking ranks to vote for and against the measure with a 60-36 vote.
While it is true that this is a good short term benefit for the average household, and keeps unemployment benefits extended beyond the standard 26 weeks, one aspect of this that is not being talked about is important – President Obama’s leadership. more

Does everyone remember when Joe Wilson shouted “You Lie!” during a State of the Union speech? Or when Jan Brewer stuck her finger in the President’s face? How about when Bill O’Reilly interrupted Obama several times during a 15 minute interview?
Perhaps a little less known, but also relevant phenomenon is what certain pundits do when they get on talk shows, especially shows that are liberal leaning such as Real Time with Bill Maher, The Rachel Maddow Show, and others. Shouting over other speakers and repeating oft-debunked talking points are a staple of a certain type of right wing pundit, and it needs to stop. more

Washington State can be said to be a progressive state, even though it mostly has a population that splits 50/50 on most partisan issues. The political issue of gay marriage is a hot topic, and has been tightly contested even in the state of Washington, until recently.
In a vote taken on February 1, 2012, the Washington State Senate passes a gay marriage equality bill 28-21. The Senate was considered the biggest hurdle to the legislation, with the House expected to approve it easily and governor Gregoire expected to sign it as soon as it reaches her desk. When that happens, Washington State will become the 7th state to legalize same-sex marriage. more

A topic that gets too little coverage nowadays, Climate Change, is back in the spotlight this week as a new NASA report highlights what has been obvious for years: Global warming is real and humans are mostly the cause. That’s mostly, with an M.
Not only is Climate Change real, but the science behind it has been telling us this for some time. Ever since the conversation first started, there have been those that deny it out of fear that the status quo of drilling for oil and massive amounts of pollution caused by their “free market” efforts will be hampered by anyone trying to stop global warming from happening. more
